Jasmine Birtles on Money Mastery and Media Savvy

Mar 9, 2024

The meeting point of art and commerce is an ever-changing and chimeric point of interaction. What place does art have in the world of finance? How can young, savvy individuals learn to secure their footing in the world of work through smart investment? What advice do successful entrepreneurs have for the youth of today about finance, culture, and belief in the self? These are all questions ‘Art and the City’ seeks to answer, by interviewing some of the brightest and boldest minds in both the art world and the city.

Joining us on this episode of the podcast is Jasmine Birtles, finance journalist and founder of website and advice hub Money Magpie. She has featured on programmes such as BBC Breakfast News, This Morning and Daybreak, as well as having a regular finance feature on Radio 2. She is also the author of an astonishing 38 books, and has been on numerous radio shows, as well as presented on TV, all on the topics of financial advice and fulfilment.

She begins by explaining how she acquired her current job, and the path of indecision and juggling work/life balance that took place before she became successful as a freelancer. Jasmine explains that money wasn’t the biggest driver early on in life, but that soon after she got into debt and was offered a miracle job working for the BBC’s business unit, she understand that the world of finance was something she was both interested in, and could help her out in her personal life.

With this in mind, Jasmine also responds to the question – can you gain a good financial education yourself online? – with a resounding “yes”. She explains that there are many excellent resources, both on social media and websites, that direct you towards financial empowerment in an easily accessible way. Her own website, MoneyMagpie.com, emerged from Jasmine’s desire to explain to people life herself with, no formal training in the subject, how to make money and save yourself from debt.

Her lasting piece of financial advice? Save now, invest later. And if you have some spare cash, one of the best places it can go is towards your mortgage.
